Bath bombs are a fun way to add a little magic to your tub, but many times these fizzy bath accessories are filled with hidden toxic ingredients or cost a small fortune. Don’t get me wrong, I still like buying them on occasion, especially if they are pretty colors or have glitter in them. But if you can save some money and make them at home, why not try? Fair warning: this is a messy project. Plan accordingly!
Before we get into the recipe, you’ll need a few items that I got on Amazon or might be found at your local craft store.
- Bath bomb molds
- Skin safe soap dye/food coloring
- Shrink wrap bags (optional – only needed if you plan to give these as gifts)
You can get all of these in one kit for under $25 on Amazon here.

Homemade Bath Bombs
DRY Ingredients
1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid
1/2 cup epsom salt
1/2 cup cornstarch
- WET INGREDIENTS
2 1/2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
3/4 tablespoon water
15 drops essential oils
5-10 drops coloring
Directions
- In a medium bowl, mix together all dry ingredients and stir to combine.
- In a separate small bowl, mix together the wet ingredients.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry bowl VERY SLOWLY to avoid activating the citric acid.
- Mix well until the mixture looks and feels like wet sand.
- Fill each half of the mold and pack until it slightly overflows.
- Press the halves together and let sit for one minute.
- Gently tap the seam of the mold to make it easier to release.
- Pull apart the mold and set aside to dry for 12-24 hours.
- Drop in the tub and enjoy!
Notes
- Please do some research before adding essential oils to your bath bombs. “Hot oils” like cinnamon, ginger, and peppermint, and citrus oils may cause skin irritation. Try to buy oils that are pure, not diluted with fillers.
